Volusia County has a paradox in its crash data. On a per-capita basis it is one of Florida's deadliest large counties — 21.4 deaths per 100,000 residents per year, well above the 14.7 state average — yet that danger does not pile up at a few notorious intersections the way it does in Manatee or Pasco. When we grouped every fatal and serious-injury crash by junction, only one intersection in the entire county crossed ten recurring serious crashes: Herbert St & SR 5A. Why the deadliest junction isn't the worst

The intersection with the most deaths, US 1 & Wilmette Ave, recorded 3 people killed — but in only 9 crashes. That ratio is worth pausing on. A high death count on relatively few crashes usually reflects one catastrophic event rather than a chronically dangerous junction, which is exactly why our main ranking uses recurring serious crashes instead of raw death count. By that measure the worst junction is Herbert St & SR 5A, which produced 11 serious crashes and 14 serious injuries but zero deaths — the genuinely repetitive danger. Two corridors tie the county's list together: SR 5A (Nova Road) and SR 421 (Dunlawton Avenue) each show up at multiple high-crash junctions.

Motorcycles: a Daytona signature

One factor sets Volusia apart from most Florida counties. Motorcycles are flagged in about 25% of the county's serious crashes — roughly one in four — far above the statewide share. Daytona Beach is Bike Week country, home to two of the largest motorcycle rallies in the United States, and the volume of riders on US 1, SR 5A, and the beachside routes shows up plainly in the crash record. Fatal crashes in the county peak around 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and more than half happen after dark. The deadliest single corridor is US 1, with 52 people killed over the window studied — the same road that carries the county's deadliest junction.
