If you drive in Fort Myers, the crash data points to a clear answer for which roads to respect most. We analyzed every fatal crash (from the federal FARS census) and every serious-injury crash (from Florida DOT data) in Lee County; over the window studied, 477 people were killed and 2,524 seriously injured. Fort Myers's deadliest road corridors

Ranked by the number of people killed, these are Lee County's most dangerous roads:

US 41 (the Tamiami Trail) is the deadliest road in the county and one of the most lethal per crash — about 28 deaths for every 100 serious crashes. SR 82 and SR 78 (Bayshore Road / Pine Island Road) are fast semi-rural arterials, and I-75 contributes heavy interstate volume. Two forces stand out in Lee's numbers: motorcycles and alcohol. Motorcycles factor into 18.2% of deaths and impairment into 13.4% — both far above the levels in Florida's big metros, a signature of a county built around year-round riding weather, retirees, and tourism.

Where the danger concentrates

Unlike denser metros, Lee County's deaths do not pile up at one notorious junction. They spread along the length of its corridors — US 41 through the built-up coast, SR 82 and SR 78 across faster semi-rural stretches, and Lee Boulevard out toward Lehigh Acres. That pattern is typical of a fast-growing county where high-speed arterials run for miles between signals, so the risk is distributed along the road rather than fixed at a single intersection. It means the safest instinct is to treat the whole corridor as the hazard, not just the light ahead.

When and how crashes happen in Fort Myers

Lee's crashes peak late. The single deadliest hour is around 9–10 p.m., Saturday is the deadliest day of the week, and 53.4% of fatal crashes happen after dark. The behavioral mix is unusually dangerous: 18.2% of deaths involve a motorcycle and 13.4% involve an impaired driver — a combination tied to the county's retiree and tourist riding culture and its nightlife. Older drivers are heavily represented too, with 22.9% of deaths involving someone 65 or older. The deadliest single crash in the data killed 5 people in 2023.

What about intersections?

Lee County has no chronic intersection black spot. Its worst junctions — along US 41 and SR 80, such as Daniels Pkwy & US 41 — reach only about five or six recurring serious crashes.
