The Most Dangerous Intersections in St. Petersburg and Pinellas County

Pinellas County has many moderately dangerous intersections but almost no single dominant black spot. Of 54 junctions with five or more recurring serious crashes, only one crosses the 10-crash threshold — the danger is spread across the dense St. Pete street grid and up US 19.

Pinellas County is one of the most densely populated counties in Florida, and its crash pattern reflects that. When we grouped every fatal and serious-injury crash by junction, we found 54 intersections with five or more recurring serious crashes — but only one that crosses the 10-crash threshold. In other words, Pinellas has plenty of moderately dangerous intersections and almost no single dominant black spot. The danger is spread, not concentrated

What makes Pinellas different from its neighbors is the shape of the danger. In Pasco County next door, the danger piles up on one mega-corridor — the US 19 / SR 54 cluster that holds 33 of Florida's 98 most chronically dangerous intersections. Pinellas has nothing like that. Its worst junction, 49th St N & 62nd Ave N, is the only one in the entire county with 10 or more recurring serious crashes, and the intersections just behind it — 30th Avenue, 37th Street, 38th Avenue, Countryside Boulevard — are scattered across the dense St. Petersburg street grid of numbered avenues and streets. The one clear corridor is US 19, where Klosterman Road and a handful of other crossings recur; it is also the county's deadliest road overall, with 60 people killed. But even US 19 in Pinellas does not produce a single runaway-worst junction. The risk here is real but diffuse — 54 places that are each moderately dangerous, rather than one or two that dominate.
