We analyzed every fatal crash (from the federal FARS census) and every serious-injury crash (from Florida DOT data) in the county; over the window studied, 248 people were killed and 2,692 seriously injured. I-75 runs the length of the county at interstate speed and produces the largest death and injury totals from sheer volume — 47 killed across 361 serious crashes. US 41 (Tamiami Trail) is the busy coastal arterial that ties Sarasota, Venice, and Englewood together, with heavy pedestrian and turning exposure; it killed 34. Shorter stretches carry an outsized death rate per crash: Tamiami Trail and SR 45 each kill at roughly 19 deaths per 100 serious crashes, higher than either interstate. Sarasota County's crash pattern reflects its demographics. A driver 65 or older is flagged in 31.8% of serious crashes — the single largest factor, and well above the roughly 20% seen statewide. A lane departure, where a vehicle drifts or veers out of its lane, follows close behind at 29.7%. Fatal crashes peak on Friday evenings, and just over half happen after dark.
