Palm Beach County does not look like its neighbors. Where Manatee and Pasco pile up chronically dangerous intersections, Palm Beach has relatively few: when we grouped every fatal and serious-injury crash by junction, only one intersection in the entire county crossed ten recurring serious crashes. Its per-capita death rate, about 12.4 per 100,000, ranks 57th among Florida counties — below the state average. But the county's danger has a clear signature, and it has a name: Jog Road. The Jog Road problem

The pattern that jumps out of the Palm Beach data is not a county-wide grid of danger — it is a single north–south arterial. Jog Road appears at four of the county's worst intersections: where it meets SR 80, Forest Hill Boulevard, Lake Worth Road, and Lake Ida Road. Running through the fast-growing suburbs west of West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, and Delray Beach, Jog Road carries heavy commuter traffic across a long chain of signalized crossings with frequent turning movements — the exact conditions that make the same junctions produce serious crashes year after year. The single worst junction in the county, Lake Ida Rd & N Congress Ave, sits just east of that same corridor. Compared with Manatee or Pasco, Palm Beach's intersection danger is modest and localized rather than sprawling.

When crashes happen in Palm Beach County

Fatal crashes in the county peak around 9 p.m. on Saturdays, and more than half happen after dark.
